This week I caught up with Martin’s Off Licence owner Declan to talk about one of Ireland’s current crazes – gin! Here’s a list of some of his favourites along with a few tasty drinks recipes. You can find your nearest stockist of all the products mentioned using the Pointy App.
1. Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin
Winner of best gin and tonic at the Irish Gin & Tonic Festival, Drumshanbo Gunpowder is a must-try drink. The citrus flavours and gunpowder tea blend deliciously with a Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic. The beautiful bottle alone is reason enough to buy this gin!
2. Glendalough Wild Spring Botanical Gin
With only 3000 bottles produced each season, you’ll need Pointy to help you find a stockist of the coveted Glendalough seasonal series. For the Spring batch local botanicals such as Juniper, corriander seeds and lemon peel have been added as well as natural oils from gorse and dandelion flowers.
3. Bloom London Dry Gin
This delicate and floral gin has a very smooth texture meaning that it can be enjoyed neat, with tonic or in a cocktail. This would be my gin of choice when making a French 75 cocktail.
4. Sipsmith London Dry Gin
This award winning gin is praised for it’s smooth yet floral flavour. Pair it with a premium elderflower tonic and some raspberries for a refreshing and delicious drink.
5. Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin
The unusual gin from the Black Forest in Germany contains 47 unique botanicals. It’s exquisite flavour has earned it several notable awards including a Gold World Spirits award.
6. Bertha’s Revenge Small Batch Irish Milk Gin
This truly unique Irish gin is made use whey alcohol from local dairy farmers in Cork. Filled with botanicals from the countryside, Bertha’s Revenge is perfect for making sloe gin martinis.
7. ShortCross Gin

8. Death’s Door Gin
Made from a combination of Washington Island wheat and malted barley from Chilton, this local and organic gin has flavours of linalool, juniper and fennel. Mix with vermouth to enhance the flavours.
9. Gin Mare Mediterranean Gin
This Spanish gin which is made in the fishing town of Vilanova personifies Mediterranean life. Along with ‘traditional’ botanicals, Gin Mare also contains some more unusual ones which are olives, basil, thyme. Try this gin in a Royal Hawaiian cocktail.
10. Fifty Pounds London Dry Gin
This rare and handcrafted gin was named after the fifty pound levy put on gin distillers in England during the 18th Century ‘gin craze’. Botanicals include juniper berries, coriander and liquorice root.
